Celebration of the Fifth Edition of the Sanmao Prose Prize in the City of Sanmao

On April 20, 2025, the city of Dinghai became the setting for the V Sanmao Prose Awards Ceremony, an event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of this town, known for being the birthplace of the famous Chinese writer Sanmao. The ceremony, carried out in collaboration with the Dinghai District Committee, the local government, and the Zhoushan Literary and Artistic Circles Federation, was supported by the District’s Publicity Department.

The Sanmao Prose Awards were established to honor the legacy of the renowned author, aiming to recognize essays written by Chinese authors from various parts of the world. In its fifth edition, the contest has reached a significant milestone, receiving 716 works, the highest number since its creation ten years ago. After a rigorous evaluation process, 13 collections of essays and 13 individual essays were selected as winners, representing a notable thematic diversity ranging from maritime culture to rural life and traditional culture.

This year, the ceremony is part of Sanmao Literary Week, which includes a manuscript exhibition at the Zhejiang Literature Museum, as well as lectures by prominent writers. These activities aim to explore new narratives on the intersection of literature and urban development, in order to strengthen Dinghai’s cultural identity and enhance its visibility internationally.

A relevant aspect of this edition is its focus on nostalgia, as well as collaboration with Chinese communities established in Spain to pay tribute to the figure of Sanmao. This effort not only promotes the Prose Awards but also facilitates cultural exchange, stimulating interest in Sanmao’s work. Additionally, the scheduled activities are designed to spread Dinghai’s cultural achievements through digital platforms, thus expanding its reach and resonance on the global stage.
