Challenges to Attract Talent in Sustainable Construction Leadership.

The construction sector in Spain is facing a significant transformation that requires the incorporation of highly skilled professionals. Industrialization is expected to reach 30% of construction activity, highlighting the need to adapt to more sustainable and technologically advanced practices. This shift is redefining the necessary competencies in a constantly evolving workplace.

Historically, construction has been a key pillar of employment in the country, known for its stability. However, a crucial challenge is currently presenting itself: the lack of generational turnover. According to reports from the National Confederation of Construction (CNC), 75% of companies in the sector struggle to find qualified workers. This problem is particularly alarming due to the aging of the current workforce, leading companies to seek talent with international experience and project management training.

Furthermore, the shortage of professionals is even more evident in management positions, where female representation remains low. This underrepresentation limits the sector’s total talent potential and emphasizes the importance of promoting diversity and gender equality at all organizational levels. Carmen Caro, director of the Construction Area at Catenon, notes a significant growth in demand for professionals with experience in mergers and acquisitions, project financing, ESG criteria (environmental, social, and governance), and project management.

Another challenge to face is adapting to new sustainability and energy efficiency criteria. Increasing regulation around decarbonization is forcing the sector to innovate in construction solutions and materials, underscoring the need for professionals specialized in sustainability, circular economy, and renewable energies applied to construction.

In the face of this landscape, training and attracting international talent have become key factors in ensuring the future of the sector. Companies are establishing collaborations with universities and research centers to identify high-potential profiles, as well as implementing training programs to update their teams’ skills to prepare for market changes.

Catenon has positioned itself as a strategic ally in the search for global executive talent, assisting companies in locating professionals capable of driving the construction transformation. Their technological approach allows companies to access a wider range of candidates, ensuring their competitiveness in an environment that demands adaptability and innovation.
