The conflict in Gaza has reached new heights of violence and devastation with a recent Israeli airstrike that has severely impacted the Kamal Adwan hospital in the northern region. In the early hours of Wednesday, without prior warning or evacuation order, a bombardment was unleashed on the medical center resulting in the tragic loss of at least four staff members. This act has plunged the hospital into a state of chaos, as intense bombings were heard throughout the night in its surroundings.
According to Rik Peeperkorn, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), the situation became even more critical when, early in the morning, an Israeli tank positioned itself near the hospital and people were ordered to evacuate the area. The sudden announcement caused panic among those present, many of whom tried to flee by scaling walls in their desperation, only to find themselves under Israeli fire, which increased the number of casualties.
In a parallel episode, the Office of Human Rights has reported an airstrike on a camp in Al Mawasi, Khan Younis, which housed 21 families. This camp, considered a “safe humanitarian zone” by the Israeli army, was almost completely destroyed. The attack resulted in a fatal toll of at least 23 Palestinians, including four children and two women, one of whom was pregnant. Israel has justified the attack by claiming it targeted senior Hamas officials, alleging that the secondary explosions were due to hidden arsenals in the area. However, reports from the Office of Human Rights suggest that gas canisters were the cause of these secondary explosions.
These incidents are part of a growing escalation of violence in the region, with this being the seventh attack on internally displaced camps in the last two weeks. As the conflict continues, affected communities face an uncertain future marked by fear and suffering.
