On April 4, 2025, the Research Institute of Hospital del Mar achieved a prominent accreditation from the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, a milestone that reinforces its commitment to oncology research. This accreditation, valid for four years, is part of the Accreditation Centers Scientific Foundation AECC 2024 program, positioning the hospital among a select group of 13 centers of excellence in cancer research in Spain.

The process to obtain this accreditation was meticulous and challenging, as the institute had to meet a series of strict requirements. These included the obtaining of at least two grants for research projects in the last three years, the inclusion of at least three principal investigators in the oncology field, the existence of an ongoing international project related to cancer, and the publication of at least two articles in high-impact scientific journals where institute members are listed as principal authors.

The culmination of this rigorous process included an external analysis conducted by a committee of experts, leading to the development of an improvement plan in collaboration with the Scientific Foundation. This plan, accompanied by a budget of 200,000 euros, will be monitored throughout the accreditation period, ensuring the continuity of the institute’s commitment to quality research.

Dr. Joaquín Arribas, director of the Research Institute of Hospital del Mar, highlighted that the renewal of this accreditation not only underscores his team’s effort in advancing science but also reaffirms their dedication to innovative and quality research in the field of cancer. The accreditation also implies a strengthening of collaboration between different centers and institutions, allowing for more efficient resource management and maximizing the benefits of scientific advances in the fight against this disease.

Furthermore, the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer has established rigorous criteria to ensure excellence in accredited centers, with the ambitious goal of increasing the overall cancer survival rate to 70% by 2030. This recognition represents an important step in the battle against cancer, offering renewed hope to both researchers and patients.
