In an increasingly digital context, raising children presents itself as a constant challenge, especially in relation to the use of new technologies. Logos Nursery School’s Parent School has kicked off its 2024-25 course with a session dedicated to analyzing the impact of these tools on childhood. The meeting took place at the school and was led by Beatriz Fernández and Sonia Pérez, experts in educational guidance, special educational needs, and speech and language.
During the meeting, four key questions were posed to the parents: their opinion on the use of new technologies, how screens are used at home, whether they consider the use to be balanced in external places, and whether technological use has increased at home. These questions sparked a debate in which parents shared their experiences and concerns about managing screen time. Some parents valued the occasional use of devices to entertain children, while others acknowledged the difficulty of regulating use after introducing devices at early ages.
The experts emphasized the importance of promoting responsible use from an early age, and parents agreed on the need to achieve a healthy balance. They relied on scientific data to illustrate the consequences of excessive screen time, which include brain alterations, overstimulation of the nervous system, and attention and social skills problems.
The session also offered strategies for a balanced approach in the use of technologies. These included setting time limits, encouraging alternative activities like reading or outdoor play, and avoiding the use of devices during significant family moments, such as meals. Parents were encouraged to set an example with their own behavior regarding the use of technologies.
Despite the risks, the potential benefits of technologies were also recognized when used in moderation and for educational purposes. Applications can complement learning, but it is crucial to differentiate between those with educational value and those that only offer entertainment.
The Parent School committed to continue collaborating with families to address educational challenges together in this digital age. In future sessions, strategies will be examined to improve children’s attention and concentration, seeking a balance between the use of technologies and other activities that promote holistic development.
