The European University Veterinary Clinical Hospital celebrated its first anniversary, establishing itself as a reference in veterinary training and care. The commemoration took place at an event attended by the Minister of Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid, Emilio Viciana, as well as the president and CEO of the European University, Otilia de la Fuente. The event brought together important figures from the academic and political spheres, including mayors from the region and the President of the Madrid Veterinary College.
During his speech, Viciana emphasized the importance of veterinary training in Madrid universities, stating that they are “valued worldwide” thanks to a curriculum that prioritizes scientific fundamentals and a high level of demand. He also highlighted the crucial role of veterinary professionals not only in animal health, but also in agriculture and public health protection. In its first year of operation, the hospital has treated more than 1,500 animals, reflecting its commitment to animal welfare and the training of future specialists.
Otilia de la Fuente added that in the Community of Madrid, there are more than 300,000 veterinary consultations annually through almost 900 clinics, highlighting the need for specialized facilities such as the Veterinary Clinical Hospital. This infrastructure not only enhances the competitiveness of Madrid universities, but also positions the region as a global leader in health sciences education.
The dean of the Faculty of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Natividad Pérez Villalobos, emphasized the hospital’s commitment to students, society, and animal welfare, highlighting its focus on technological innovation and teamwork. The hospital has implemented a 24-hour emergency service, with a triage system for priority care, and specialized units in areas such as hospitalization, intensive care, traumatology, and cardiology. Ignacio Calvo, the director of the center, reported that approximately 3,000 consultations and more than 400 surgeries were carried out in the first year, with 187 veterinary clinics referring cases to the hospital.
With this strong focus on quality veterinary care and the training of new professionals, the European University Veterinary Clinical Hospital establishes itself as a key pillar in advancing animal health and education in the sector.
