The Mapfre Foundation hosted the IX edition of the Enalta Awards 2025, an event that highlighted the five best cemeteries in Spain across various categories. Organized by Enalta, a well-established company in funeral services management, this initiative aims to enhance the heritage value of these locations and to normalize death as an essential part of the life cycle.
A jury composed of experts in the funeral sector, as well as in art, history, and the environment, evaluated the nominations in five categories: Best Cemetery, Best Story, Best Monument, Best Open House Activity, and Best Environmental Initiative. Public voting, facilitated through the Adiós Cultural Magazine website, ensured a democratic process, emphasizing the importance of these spaces as places of memory and collective tribute.
The Las Ruedas Pintia Cemetery in Valladolid was awarded Best Cemetery, receiving the prize from Carlos Sanz Mínguez. The San José Municipal Cemetery in Granada took first place in the Best Story category, while the Ciriego Cemetery in Cantabria was recognized for its exceptional monument. The San Rafael Cemetery in Monturque, Córdoba, shone for its open house activities, and the Our Lady of Fuensanta Cemetery, also in Córdoba, won the award for Best Environmental Initiative.
The ceremony, hosted by journalist José Yélamo, took place in a setting rich in history and art, adding special significance to the event. Notable figures from the insurance and funeral sectors, as well as representatives from the municipalities of the awarded cemeteries, were present at this celebration.
Since its inaugural edition, the Cemetery Contest of Spain has emerged as one of the most significant cultural events in the sector, encouraging municipalities to care for and promote their cemeteries as dignified spaces worthy of visit and integration into urban life. This initiative reinforces the idea that cemeteries are, in addition to places of rest, spaces that inform and connect communities.
