KeepCool, a Spanish company specializing in food preservation technologies, has been selected to be part of the European project FUSION, an initiative that aims to reduce food waste in the Mediterranean region. This project aligns with the new legislation on food waste in Spain and aims to reduce food losses by 40% over the next three years.
Recently, KeepCool also joined the Lanzadera program, highlighting its commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions to combat food waste in the region. FUSION, part of the PRIMA program, involves several Mediterranean countries, including Spain, Italy, Egypt, Lebanon, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Jordan, bringing together efforts and resources to address this global issue.
The company stands out for its effective technologies, such as KC Transport, designed for proper food transportation, and KC BIOgermicide, which extends the shelf life of products. This experience positions KeepCool as a key partner for the success of the project, which also involves the participation of the Technical University of Cartagena, leading the initiative, as well as other Spanish entities dedicated to developing solutions from conservation chambers to new agricultural varieties.
The project consortium will focus on creating low-cost technologies, including the development of conservation chambers and edible coatings, along with platforms that ensure food traceability. In addition, economic and social evaluations will be conducted to establish sustainable business models in the sector.
Juan José Caravaca, COO of KeepCool, has stated that this collaboration is a great opportunity to continue advancing in solutions that reduce food waste. Meanwhile, Antonio Soto, CPO of the company, has highlighted the importance of optimizing processes to offer the best solutions in this area. KeepCool’s CEO, Alberto Manuel López, has reaffirmed that their sustainability efforts go hand in hand with improving companies’ economic performance.
This innovative initiative comes at a time when Spanish legislation requires food companies to adopt measures to prevent waste, establishing fines that can reach up to 500,000 euros. KeepCool’s collaboration in the Lanzadera program, promoted by Juan Roig, founder of Mercadona, further strengthens the company’s commitment to combating food waste, highlighting its focus not only in the European context but also internationally.
