The City Council of Fuengirola has renewed its contract with FCC Medio Ambiente for the management of waste collection and street cleaning in the city, a service that the company has been managing since 2020. This new agreement, which came into effect on January 1st, is valued at 37.1 million euros and has a duration of four years, with the possibility of an additional one-year extension.
The service will serve over 85,000 residents and will have a team of 237 workers operating a completely renewed fleet of 74 vehicles, including electric units. This new machinery fleet has been designed with a focus on sustainability, incorporating technologies such as solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and LED lighting systems, aiming to reduce energy and water consumption.
Additionally, FCC Medio Ambiente will implement an innovative digital platform called VISION, which will enable comprehensive service management and facilitate real-time interaction to address issues and attend to residents’ requests. This technological improvement will include the use of GIS and GPS systems in vehicles, as well as a Service Monitoring Center dedicated to coordinating daily cleaning and collection tasks.
Regarding waste collection, approximately 36,000 tons will be managed annually. The new contract will introduce new categories for selective collection, including vegetative and construction waste, as well as domestic animal waste. The collection of organic fraction in all households will also be improved.
Street cleaning will cover over 130 kilometers of streets, including new areas of the municipality that were not previously covered. Cleaning tasks will be intensified, especially during peak seasons and events that attract a large number of tourists. The use of electric carts, high-capacity sweepers, and advanced waste management technology will also be part of the improvements, such as volumetric sensors and weighing systems.
Finally, a Communication and Awareness Plan will be implemented, with the aim of promoting citizen collaboration and raising awareness among residents about the importance of caring for the environment. This plan will include various informational campaigns and educational activities in schools and associations during the contract period.
FCC Medio Ambiente, part of the FCC Group, has been providing environmental services for over 120 years and now serves 67 million people in more than 5,400 municipalities around the world.
