Samsung Electronics has celebrated the selection of five of its researchers as members of the prestigious 2025 Fellows program of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This recognition highlights excellence in the field of engineering, with the title of ‘IEEE Fellow’ being one of the highest that can be awarded within the organization. The chosen ones are Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President and Chief Technical Officer of the Device eXperience (DX) division; Younsun Kim, a master at Samsung Research; Timothy Hospedales, head of the Samsung Research AI Center in Europe; Michael Scott Brown, leader of the AI Center in Toronto; and Yuri Masuoka, Fellow and head of the SRAM laboratory in the Device Solutions (DS) division.
The IEEE selection process is rigorous and limited to 0.1% of its membership, rewarding those who have made significant contributions to society. Evaluation criteria include at least ten years of experience, outstanding achievements in research and development, as well as contributions to the industry.
Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun has been honored for his leadership in 5G technologies and virtualized radio access networks. Since joining Samsung in 2012, he has been instrumental in the development of unique technologies, leading to the commercialization of the world’s first 5G mobile communication technology. Cheun has expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed Samsung’s commitment to research and development of innovative solutions that improve people’s lives.
Younsun Kim has been recognized for his role in standardizing the 5G physical layer, actively participating in the Radio Access Network (RAN WG1) of 3GPP and now preparing for the standardization of RAN 6G, set to launch next year.
Timothy Hospedales has been awarded for his research in efficient machine learning and meta-learning, while Michael Scott Brown received recognition for his work in color image processing in cameras. Additionally, Yuri Masuoka excelled in the development of cutting-edge transistors in foundries.
This achievement reflects Samsung Electronics’ positive track record in IEEE Fellow nominations, with a notable number of company experts receiving this honor in various disciplines.
