Flexible Renting: An Innovative Option for Electric Mobility

The interest in electric vehicles in Spain is on the rise, according to the recent Northgate Renting Flexible Mobility Survey. This study reveals that the high cost of fuel has become a key factor in encouraging drivers to consider transitioning to more sustainable forms of mobility. 40.3% of respondents have expressed their intention to adopt an electric car in the near future.

The results indicate that the majority of those considering this option, 73%, plan to do so within five years. Of this group, 25% believe the change could happen in just two or three years. This shift in mindset is being driven by several reasons, including restrictions on the circulation of combustion vehicles, government support initiatives, and a growing awareness of environmental issues.

The reasons motivating this transition are varied. Fuel savings are mentioned as the main driver of this interest, cited by 41.9% of respondents. Another highlight is the need for electric cars to adapt to users’ daily routines, a concern shared by 38.7% of respondents. Additionally, nearly 24% are attracted to the option of renting, which allows them to experience an electric vehicle before committing to a long-term commitment.

However, despite this growing interest, the study also highlights a significant lack of information among drivers. 46% of participants admit to not being well-informed about fundamental aspects of electric cars, such as maintenance, charging process, range, and subsidies available for their purchase.

In this context, flexible renting emerges as an accessible alternative. According to the survey, 30.6% of respondents have at some point considered renting an electric or hybrid vehicle. The main motivation for choosing renting is to avoid the initial expense involved in purchasing a new car, a reason cited by 59.8% of participants.

Northgate emphasizes that, although there is a clear intention to move towards electric mobility, there is still a significant degree of ignorance that may hinder this process. Their flexible renting model seeks to provide a solution that allows enjoying an electric car without the need for large initial investments, without long-term commitments, and with all expenses included in a fixed monthly fee.
