The National Museum of the Prado will close the year with one last late-night opening on December 7th, from 8:30pm to 11:30pm, offering art lovers a unique opportunity to enjoy its exhibitions for free. With limited capacity, this special evening will allow access to multiple exhibitions in the Jerónimos and Villanueva buildings.
Among the exhibitions open to the public is “Hand in Hand. Sculpture and color in the Golden Age”. This exhibition highlights the importance of polychrome sculpture in Spanish art, presenting five recently acquired works: Good and Bad Thief by Alonso Berruguete, as well as sculptures of Saint John the Baptist, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus, linked to a late medieval Castilian Descent.
Additionally, visitors can enjoy “Sigmar Polke. Unveiled Affinities,” which offers a glimpse into the fascinating dialogue between the influential contemporary German artist and the Spanish pictorial tradition represented by Francisco de Goya. The innovative and visionary tension of both artists, separated by almost two centuries, intertwines in this exhibition.
On the other hand, “Paper Oaths. The citizen pact in the drawings of José de Madrazo” proposes an intimate approach to the ideological and artistic evolution of Madrazo, through a selection of drawings from the Daza-Madrazo Collection. The works range from anatomical studies to preparations for large canvases, showing the influence of Jacques Louis David and the impact of classical statuary on his work.
The full opening of the ground floor of the Villanueva building will allow a journey through the history of painting, from the Romanesque and Gothic to the 19th century. Among the works on display are emblematic pieces by artists such as Bosch, Van der Weyden, Sofonisba Anguissola, Fra Angelico, and Goya, among others.
On this evening, visitors can also explore technological developments made by Samsung in collaboration with the Prado Museum and enjoy a specially designed photocall for the event. In addition, users of Samsung devices compatible with the Prado Guide app can download content for free in 10 languages, including comments on more than 400 masterpieces.
The experience is complemented by the museum’s shop, ideal for purchasing Christmas gifts, and the Café Prado, which will offer ambient music in the Jerónimos hall. The entrance to the event will be through the Jerónimos door, with access allowed until 11:00pm.
This initiative is supported by Samsung, Radio 3, and the Community of Madrid. Since 2013, Samsung has promoted various projects with the museum under the “Technology with Purpose” strategy, while Radio 3 promotes culture through creativity workshops. The Community of Madrid, on the other hand, seeks to strengthen the regional cultural offer, promoting quality tourist destinations nationally and internationally.
