In 2024, the production of fresh vegetables in the European Union reached a total of 62.2 million tons, marking a 6% increase compared to the 58.8 million tons from the previous year. This rise is largely attributed to the efforts of major producing countries such as Spain, Italy, and France, which together account for 55% of the harvest, contributing 14.8 million, 13.9 million, and 5.8 million tons, respectively.
Among the key vegetables, tomato production rose by 5%, reaching 16.8 million tons. Italy stood out as the largest producer, representing 36% of the total EU production, followed by Spain with 27% and Portugal with 10%. Carrots also saw significant growth, increasing by 6% to reach 4.7 million tons. The main carrot producers were Germany at 18%, France at 14%, and Poland at 12%. Onion production surged by 11%, totaling 7 million tons. The Netherlands dominated the market with 26%, followed by Spain at 20% and Germany at 12%.
In the fruit, berry, and nut sector, production in the EU decreased by 2% to reach 24.3 million tons. Italy, Spain, and Poland continued to be the largest producers, accounting for 57% of the total production with 5.4 million, 4.3 million, and 4.1 million tons, respectively. Apple production also experienced a decline of 4%, totaling 11.6 million tons, with Poland, Italy, and France leading the output.
Pear production saw a slight increase of 2%, reaching 1.9 million tons. The main contributors in this case were Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium, with 24%, 17%, and 15% of the production, respectively. Meanwhile, peach cultivation showed notable concentration, with Spain, Italy, and Greece accounting for 91% of total production, which was 2% higher than the previous year.
These data highlight not only the diversity of agriculture in the European Union but also the crucial role that horticultural sectors play in the regional economy, as well as their contribution to food security on the continent. The EU’s agricultural production capacity remains a fundamental pillar in ensuring the supply of quality food to its citizens.
