The 61st edition of the Catalan Mathematical Olympiad was held on December 13 and 14 in Barcelona, Lleida, and Tarragona, showcasing the significant mathematical talent in Catalonia despite declining results in recent PISA and TIMSS tests. Montserrat Alsina, president of the Catalan Mathematical Society – Institute of Catalan Studies (SCM-IEC), highlighted the presence of brilliant young minds in the competition, especially among the most outstanding students.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) hosted the competition, bringing together high school students, some of whom had already achieved success in previous editions. Participants included those selected to attend the International Summer School in Cyprus in 2024, as well as teachers who had won medals in international competitions in their youth.
One of the highlights of this edition was the increased interest of girls in mathematics. Contestant Vera Morancho shared her experience in the world of math contests from a young age and noticed how, after her initial participation, other girls felt motivated to join. Contestant Dina Markhavskoya mentioned the importance of preparation and the challenge of tackling mathematics, describing it as an exciting and stimulating activity.
The competition results were impressive, with Guillem Vizcarro from the Ernest Lluch Institute in Barcelona taking first place, followed by Vera Morancho and Daniel Carpenter, among others. Participants expressed their enthusiasm for the experience, noting that the competition is not just about individual achievements but also about fostering valuable friendships and relationships.
Joan Francesc Fondevila, president of the Catalan Communication Society, emphasized the versatility of mathematics, highlighting its applicability in multiple disciplines and the importance of promoting its dissemination to attract more students. Xavier Xarles, a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, emphasized the availability of both face-to-face and virtual preparations, where students engage in solving complex problems as a fundamental part of their educational approach.
This event not only highlighted academic excellence in mathematics but also aims to transform the perception of this subject at all educational levels. The Catalan Mathematical Olympiad stands as a clear example of the dynamism and vitality of mathematics, showcasing its ability to address everyday problems and its potential to bring joy and enjoyment among young people.
