Guterres: Lebanon One Step Closer to a Promising Future

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, recently concluded a two-day solidarity visit to Lebanon with a message of optimism about the country’s future. In his speech in Beirut, Guterres urged the new government, the Lebanese people, and the international community to “make the most of this atmosphere of opportunity,” referring to the opening of a “window that paves the way towards a new era of institutional stability.”

During his visit, Guterres met with the recently elected president, Joseph Aoun, and the designated prime minister, Nawaf Salam. Despite the numerous challenges facing Lebanon, the Secretary-General highlighted a hopeful atmosphere and emphasized the crucial importance of collaboration between the country and the UN to address the reconstruction needs resulting from recent conflicts.

During his tour of southern Lebanon, Guterres was able to witness first-hand the devastation caused by recent confrontations. “The reconstruction needs are great, but they are not insurmountable,” he assured, promising that the UN will intensify its support in recovery and reconstruction efforts, working closely with Lebanese authorities and other international partners. He also expressed his wish for Israelis affected by the conflicts to return to normalcy soon, emphasizing the need to maintain the current fragile ceasefire.

The senior official called on both parties to respect the ceasefire commitments and use this agreement as a platform to address outstanding issues. Guterres also noted significant progress such as the gradual withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces and the increased deployment of the Lebanese Army in the south, although he expressed concern about ongoing airstrikes and demolitions plaguing the region.

Throughout his visit, Guterres also referred to the regional situation, highlighting the rapid changes in Gaza and Syria. He praised the spirit of solidarity of the Lebanese people in hosting numerous refugees, urging the international community to reflect that same spirit towards Lebanon. “The path forward is full of promises, but also significant challenges that require reforms and greater accountability,” he noted.

As he concluded his trip, Guterres expressed hope that, with cooperation and commitment, a new chapter of peace can be opened for Lebanon. He reiterated his full support for President Aoun and the future government, confirming that it is possible to strengthen institutions and create the necessary conditions for the Lebanese state to protect all its citizens.

Starting his visit in Naqoura, Guterres also met with the UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, praising the troops operating in extremely difficult circumstances, emphasizing that the mission is at the “frontline of peace” in an environment considered one of the most challenging for peacekeeping forces worldwide.
