Guterres warns of Military Escalation in the Middle East following Israel’s Attack on Iran

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East following attacks by the Israeli Army on targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In a statement issued this Saturday by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the urgent need to halt all military actions and resume the path of diplomacy is emphasized. Guterres highlighted that “all acts of escalation are condemnable and must cease,” calling on the parties involved to act together and prevent a possible total regional war.

This declaration comes in a climate of growing tension in the region, where armed clashes are intensifying, severely impacting civilians and humanitarian workers. One focus of the crisis is in northern Gaza, where the situation is particularly critical. The Kamal Adwan hospital is being besieged by Israeli forces, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has managed to establish communication with its staff to strengthen medical assistance efforts amid the conflict. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has reported via the X social network that three health workers have been injured, 44 detained, and four ambulances have been damaged.

Inside the hospital, about 600 people, including patients and medical staff, are taking refuge, with normal operations affected by the siege and attacks. This scenario has emerged just after a WHO mission delivered essential supplies and transferred critically ill patients to another hospital. Dr. Tedros has issued an urgent call to protect hospitals, healthcare workers, and patients, emphasizing the need to ensure safety amid a worsening humanitarian crisis every day.
