Historic record: over 70,000 asylum applications recorded in June 2024.

In June 2024, the number of first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) who applied for international protection in European Union countries totaled 70,375, representing a 17% decrease compared to June 2023, when 84,730 applications were recorded.

On the other hand, there were 6,540 subsequent applicants, reflecting a 6% increase compared to the 6,185 recorded in June of the previous year. This information comes from the monthly asylum data published today by Eurostat.

Regarding the origin of asylum seekers, Syrians remained the largest group with 10,165 first-time applicants, followed by Venezuelans with 6,340 and Afghans with 5,930.

Germany, Spain, Italy, and France were the most common destinations for new asylum seekers, receiving 76% of all applications in June 2024. Germany recorded 16,770 applications, Spain 14,855, Italy 11,685, and France 10,510.

In terms of the asylum applicants rate per one hundred thousand inhabitants, the EU average was 15.7 in June 2024. However, Greece led this metric with a rate of 45.4, followed by Spain with 30.6 and Ireland with 26.2.

Additionally, in June 2024, 2,395 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU. Most of these minors came from Syria (675), Afghanistan (405), and Egypt (255). Germany topped the list of recipient countries for unaccompanied minor asylum applications with 725 requests, followed by Bulgaria (300), Greece (290), the Netherlands (260), and Spain (255).

These data highlight the continued migratory pressure on certain member states and the variability in the nationalities of asylum seekers, as well as the importance of asylum and migration policies in the European Union.
