How to Adjust Power to Save on Your Electricity Bill: Gana Energía’s Tips

With the arrival of autumn and the imminent time change, Gana Energía, a company specialized in electricity and natural gas, has shared several tips to help families optimize their energy expenses. In a context where the cost of electricity continues to be a concern for many households, the company proposes adjusting the contracted electrical power as a key strategy to reduce the electricity bill.

According to a recent study by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC), around 70% of homes in Spain have contracted more electrical power than they actually need. The contracted power represents a fixed cost on the electricity bill, which is charged regardless of the actual energy consumption, thus playing a crucial role in the household’s monthly expenses.

Gana Energía suggests its customers evaluate their contracted power through a simple test: turning on all devices and lights in the house simultaneously and observing if this causes a power cut. If not, it is likely that the contracted power is higher than necessary. Reducing the power by one kilowatt (kW) could lead to annual savings of up to 48 euros.

However, the company warns about the risks of contracting a power that is too low. Exceeding the contracted capacity would cause recurring power cuts, which is neither practical nor convenient for users. The recommendation of experts is to find a balance in which electrical interruptions only occur in exceptional situations.

The process of changing power requires contacting the electricity retailer and it is essential to consider the different rates applied according to time slots, such as peak hours and off-peak hours. This change entails a fixed cost stipulated by the distributor and can only be done once a year.

Ultimately, the efficient management of energy consumption depends on adjusting the power to the real needs of each household, leaving a small margin for occasional demand peaks. To facilitate this, Gana Energía offers its customers the possibility of personalized advice to better understand their consumption patterns and determine the exact amount of kW that optimally fits their lifestyle.
