The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has decided to take a significant step towards improving energy efficiency in Valencia’s road infrastructure, through the tender of two contracts totaling 17 million euros. This investment is aimed at modernizing the lighting along 24 kilometers of the V-31, A-3, and A-7 highways, with the installation of 2,300 LED luminaires, known for their low energy consumption and durability.
The first contract, worth 13.58 million euros, will focus on the V-31 highway, covering a 13-kilometer stretch from its beginning at the A-7 junction to kilometer 13, where it connects to the V-30. This intervention will impact several municipalities, such as Silla, Beniparrell, Albal, Catarroja, Massanassa, Alfafar, Sedaví, and Valencia. New luminaires will be installed on both sides of the main trunk road of the highway, while the branches will receive unilateral design. Additionally, efforts will be made to preserve existing poles wherever possible, complemented by civil works including the creation of new ducts.
The second contract, valued at 3.47 million euros, is destined for the A-3 highway and includes the installation of over 1,000 LED luminaires in the sections crossing Riba-roja de Túria and Quart de Poblet, specifically between kilometers 338,100 and 348,200. This project will replace sodium vapor luminaires with LED technology, thus increasing energy efficiency on these roads.
These actions are part of the Energy Efficiency Plan of the Directorate General of Highways, balancing technological innovation and sustainability, while attempting to maintain existing infrastructure. A new intelligent lighting control system will also be implemented, promising more efficient resource management and resulting in significant cost and energy savings.
This initiative is in line with commitments made to the European Commission within the context of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, demonstrating the government’s intention to modernize and make transportation infrastructure in Spain more sustainable.
