The Association for Local Development of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara (ADEL Sierra Norte) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a wide-ranging program of cultural and environmental activities that will take place in various mountainous towns during the summer and fall. The main celebration of this milestone will take place on September 18 in Umbralejo.
Established in 1994 as a non-profit entity, ADEL Sierra Norte has been working for three decades to promote local development in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. In collaboration with mayors, authorities, technicians from the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha (JCCM), the Provincial Council of Guadalajara, other rural development groups, cultural associations, youth groups, housewives, farmers, residents, and schools, the association has implemented programs for the benefit of entrepreneurs, municipal initiatives, and the well-being of residents and visitors in one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe.
To commemorate these three decades of work, ADEL has designed a series of activities aimed at promoting knowledge of the environment and cultural tradition of the region. Under the title “Know your environment”, 20 nature and environmental education activities are being carried out to deepen understanding of the environmental knowledge of the fauna, flora, and ecosystems of each participating town. These activities include guided walks by qualified monitors and family scavenger hunts based on the material from the “Know the Sierra Norte” Quiz, developed within the framework of the Plan for Settlement and Enhancement of the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara.
In addition, there are also 20 exhibitions of mountain folklore and traditional dances planned. These activities, organized in collaboration with a teacher from the folklore school of the Provincial Council of Guadalajara, include displays of dances, music, instruments, and traditional costumes that delve into the mountain roots. Instruments such as castanets, stick dances, bagpipes, and the ribbon stick are presented as part of the local folklore.
Alongside these activities, ADEL has launched two books as part of its 30th anniversary. The first, entitled “Read and Learn with ADEL Sierra Norte”, is a cultural and educational project aimed at students in the region that seeks to highlight the protected areas and relevant ecosystems of the region. The second book focuses on ADEL’s achievements related to different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as quality education, clean water and sanitation, climate action, and terrestrial ecosystem life. Both texts, written by author Antonio de Benito, include characters and adventures related to the territory, as well as games and tasks for students in the Sierra Norte.
These initiatives reflect ADEL Sierra Norte’s ongoing commitment to the comprehensive and sustainable development of the region, emphasizing the importance of culture and the environment in building a more prosperous future for its communities.
