This weekend, on April 6th, the XXV edition of the Transborder Route will be celebrated, an exciting hiking journey that will start on the slopes of Sierra Fría. Registrations will remain open until April 3rd, offering nature and sports enthusiasts a unique opportunity to enjoy a privileged natural environment.
The Transborder Route is part of the program “NaturRed. Feel the History, Feel the Nature”, a tourism initiative launched by the Network of Medieval Cities and Villages in 2022. This program seeks to highlight not only the historical heritage, but also the natural treasures of the seven municipalities that make it up. Thanks to the March rains, the natural spaces of the Network are presented in their best state, surpassing the significance of their architectural heritage and attracting more visitors.
“NaturRed” offers a variety of routes that allow you to discover unique natural habitats, enjoy native flora and fauna, walk along ancient commercial paths, and observe birds in wetlands, a highlight for birdwatching enthusiasts. On the Network’s website, you can access detailed information about each of these spaces, including complete descriptions, locations, and links for their exploration.
Recently, Valencia de Alcántara has joined this network by incorporating the impressive Natural Monument of La Data, also known as the Berrocal de La Data. This area, located in the hamlet of La Aceña de la Borrega, covers 465 hectares and stands out for its grand granite rock formations. Apart from its geological value, it houses a significant archaeological heritage that includes five dolmens and cave paintings, evidence of human presence in the region since prehistoric times.
The Berrocal de La Data was declared a Natural Monument by the Extremadura Regional Government in March 2021, becoming the fifth in the region to receive this distinction. The hiking route that will be integrated into Valencia de Alcántara’s offering is the Transborder, which starts on the slopes of Sierra Fría. This route is known for its diversity of vegetation and the rich fauna that inhabits the area, including several species of endangered birds.
The upcoming days of April represent the last opportunity to register for this hiking route, which is part of the “Walk Extremadura 2025” circuit and the Iberian Hiking League. The activity is organized by the Valencia de Alcántara City Council, in collaboration with various local and regional entities, and the participation of numerous nature and hiking enthusiasts is expected.
The offer of natural resources varies by locality, highlighting places such as the Natural Park of Sierra de São Mamede in Marvão and the Llanos Promenade in Estella-Lizarra, as well as other significant routes in Sigüenza, Laguardia, Almazán, and Hondarribia. Each of these destinations enriches the visitor experience, integrating their natural and cultural heritage into a comprehensive tourism proposal.
