Increase and Prolongation of Mosquitoes and Insects this Spring After the Rains

The recent intense rains that have impacted various regions of the country have caused significant effects on the ecosystem, and it is predicted that the upcoming spring will bring a notable increase in the population of insects and mosquitoes. Rubén Bueno, an entomologist at Rentokil Initial, explains that the combination of abundant precipitation along with warm and humid weather will create an ideal environment for the proliferation of various pests.

According to data from the Hydrological Information Area of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the water reserve has increased by 22.7% in just three weeks, with reservoirs currently at 71.2% of their capacity. These rains have not only been beneficial for agriculture and water supply, but have also favored the fauna that reacts to the change of season. Regions like Andalusia will be especially favored, as the accumulated water will contribute to the recovery of natural spaces that had been suffering from drought, such as the Doñana Natural Park.

Experts warn that during spring, there is expected to be an exponential growth in the insect population, resulting in a resurgence of species such as ants, flies, wasps, and cockroaches. The warm conditions and flowering of plants will drive these organisms, which have been inactive during the winter, to seek new resources and habitats.

Particularly concerning is the presence of mosquitoes, as Bueno points out, as it is anticipated that they will be more active than ever due to the stagnant water left by the rains. This water, along with the moisture present in the streams, creates a conducive environment for their reproduction. Thus, not only is an increase in their numbers expected, but it is also estimated that their life cycle will be longer than in previous years.

In light of this situation, experts urge the population to take precautions. It is essential to check homes for possible sources of stagnant water, which can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Additionally, it is advisable to reinforce mosquito screens before temperatures rise, as prevention could be the best strategy to face this season of high insect activity.
