The demand for satellite internet in Spain has seen a significant increase during the summer months, reflecting a notable shift in the connectivity needs of the population. From June 21 to September 8, subscriptions have risen in nearly all autonomous communities, establishing satellite internet as a viable solution in areas with limited fiber optic or ADSL coverage.
Serenae, one of the leading companies in this sector, has pointed out that the demand for satellite internet intensifies particularly in summer, when many families move to their second homes in rural, mountainous, or coastal areas, seeking to ensure a quality connection. Additionally, the rise of remote work has boosted the need for stable and fast connectivity, regardless of location.
The regions most highlighted in this increase in subscriptions are Andalusia, Valencia, and Castile and León, which account for 22.42%, 15.76%, and 13.94% of the total, respectively. These areas feature vast rural zones and a considerable influx of tourists during the summer period. Also, communities that have historically faced digital divide issues, such as Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura, along with northern regions like Asturias and Catalonia, are witnessing an increase in the use of satellite connectivity.
Even in Madrid, where 4.55% of subscriptions correspond to second homes, the need to improve connectivity is evident. Other communities like Murcia, the Canary Islands, Aragon, and Galicia have also noted a surge in these services, demonstrating that the demand for connectivity spans the entire country.
This phenomenon reveals a clear evolution in digital culture, where connectivity has become essential both in daily life and in the workplace. Vanessa Cota, Director of Marketing and Customer Experience at Serenae, emphasized that satellite internet ensures complete coverage, overcoming the geographic limitations of other technologies.
This type of internet is not only positioning itself as a key tool to reduce inequalities and ensure territorial cohesion, but it also plays a crucial role in the digitalization of essential services such as education, healthcare, and elder care. Thus, it helps curb depopulation and strengthen local communities.
Serenae, in collaboration with partners like Hispasat, is working on adapting various satellite connectivity solutions to different contexts, ensuring stability compared to the more unstable options from other operators. Additionally, the company extends its impact beyond Spanish borders, participating in international projects in Africa, where it supports connectivity in sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare. This effort aligns with the UN’s assertion that access to the internet is a fundamental right, also supported by the European Union, which has included it among basic social rights.
