Interham and CMJ Join ‘The Meaning of Flesh’

The International Ham Institute (Interham) and the World Ham Congress (CMJ) have decided to join the initiative “The Sense of Meat,” an innovative project launched in May 2024 that brings together all links in the value chain of the meat sector. The main objective of this collaboration is to inform society about the benefits of meat products in a balanced diet and to promote responsible consumption practices.

Both organizations are committed to actively participating in the actions and campaigns proposed by the project, supporting various activities through digital tools and scheduled events in the coming months. One of the most notable initiatives will be an Instagram contest, which will take place on October 6, where participants can win meat bundles from different categories.

Julio Tapiador, president of Interham and the CMJ, emphasized the importance of ham as an icon of Spanish gastronomy and the need to contribute to this initiative to enhance knowledge about these products and their nutritional benefits.

This announcement comes at a favorable time for the meat sector, evidenced by a recent Sigma Dos study indicating that 80% of consumers consider meat an essential food, while 72% believe there are myths related to this sector. Additionally, the first quarter of 2025 showed a 5% increase in the consumption of meats and meat products compared to the same period last year.

In terms of production, Spain produces about 47 million pieces of cured ham and shoulder each year. This market not only meets domestic demand but also extends to exports to countries in the European Union, such as France and Germany, as well as to markets in the United States, Mexico, China, and Colombia.

“The Sense of Meat” aims to emphasize that meat products, when consumed appropriately, are an integral part of a varied and balanced diet, in line with the principles of the Mediterranean Diet.
