Justice for the Fallen: Griselda Triana’s Fight and the Families of Journalists Murdered in Mexico

Griselda Triana, a prominent defender of human rights and freedom of the press in Mexico, represents a figure of resilience in a country marked by violence against journalists. Born in 1969 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Triana found a home in Sinaloa after moving with her family to Culiacán. Here, she cultivated her love for nature and family life, enjoying trips to the beach in Altata, where memories of collecting clams and preparing ceviche were built as a family legacy that she has also shared with her children.

Triana’s professional career began unexpectedly in journalism while studying psychology. She entered the world of communication while working at the newspaper Noroeste, where she started by transcribing tasks before diving into the exciting world of reporting. Her career took her to different media outlets, facing the challenges of practicing journalism in a state overshadowed by violence.

A turning point in her life was the murder of her husband, journalist Javier Valdez, in 2017. This tragic event motivated her to become an active defender of human rights. She joined the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, a system that, despite not being ideal, has been a crucial tool in protecting lives.

Griselda has pointed out that in a country that guarantees freedom of expression, such a mechanism would not be necessary. However, she recognizes its importance and the progress made since its implementation, while also emphasizing the need to continue strengthening protection measures for journalists and human rights defenders in Mexico.

In the context of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Triana has urged authorities to promote a more robust dialogue and improve existing policies for the protection of these professionals. Her work has focused on providing support to the families of missing or murdered journalists, ensuring that their stories and the fight for justice are not forgotten.

Today, years after Javier’s death, Griselda looks towards the future with hope, wishing to return to Sinaloa, the environment that has witnessed her most precious moments and where she aspires to build a life full of peace and new opportunities. The echoes of her childhood on the beach call her back to create new memories in a state that, despite its challenges, remains her home.
