Kalam’s team is involved in the restoration of the Royal Thai Pavilion in Madison, USA.

The company Kalam, known for its specialization in the restoration and conservation of heritage as well as the rehabilitation of buildings, is carrying out a crucial intervention at the Royal Thai Pavilion located in the Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin, in the United States. This pavilion was a gift from the Government of Thailand in 2001 and is a significant example of traditional Thai architecture which required meticulous restoration to preserve its historical and cultural value.

Kalam’s work on this iconic building is progressing well, thanks to the expertise and qualifications of its building restoration specialists. A key highlight of this intervention is the restoration of gold leaf, a decorative element that is prominent in the pavilion’s architecture. This process demands extreme precision and an in-depth knowledge of traditional techniques to ensure that the gilding regains its original luster without losing its authenticity.

Another essential job that has been undertaken is the replacement of the ceramic tiles on its roofs. Kalam has supervised and managed the production of identical tiles, made in Valencia and exported to the United States, but with one crucial difference: the new tiles are designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions of Wisconsin, which include severe winters and extreme temperatures. This intervention ensures the pavilion’s durability and resilience, preserving its structure and aesthetics for many more years. Furthermore, the recovery of the lead protections that are part of the roofing was also carried out.

The intervention at the Royal Thai Pavilion is not limited to these aspects alone. In this second phase of work, the Kalam team is also handling the restoration of other decorative elements, such as the mirrored mosaic details that are part of the building’s ornamentation. These pieces, crucial for maintaining the visual integrity of the pavilion, will be restored using specialized techniques that respect the original materials and methods as much as possible.

Kalam’s work at the Royal Thai Pavilion has caught the attention of international media. The Journal Times published a report on the advances of the intervention, highlighting the importance of the ongoing work and the dedication of the Kalam team. The report includes a video and a comprehensive collection of photographs, providing a detailed view of the restoration process and emphasizing the significance of preserving this symbol of Thai culture in the United States.

With this project, Kalam reinforces its position as a leading company in international heritage restoration, contributing its experience in complex interventions and ensuring the conservation of cultural assets with high historical value. The completion of work at the Royal Thai Pavilion will mark a milestone in the preservation of this unique structure, securing its enjoyment for future generations.
