Kapsch TrafficCom installs first sustainable toll gantry on Austrian highway.

The wooden gantry marks a new phase in sustainable transportation infrastructure. It meets all relevant European standards and regulations.

Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to have installed Austria’s first eco-friendly gantry, in partnership with Austrian road operator Asfinag.

Unlike conventional toll gantries made of steel or aluminum, which are associated with significant emissions due to their manufacturing and recycling processes, the Eco-Gantry is made of wood. This sustainable material not only offers the same functional possibilities as conventional gantries, but also significant environmental advantages: The Eco-Gantry in Carinthia saves 15 tons of CO2, while comparable stainless steel gantries generate up to 30 tons of CO2 during production.

Javier Aguirre, Managing Director of Kapsch TrafficCom Spain and Portugal, explains: “Our Eco-Gantry not only has a positive CO2 balance, but it also has the same performance and is more environmentally friendly than a normal gantry. Additionally, it meets all relevant European standards and regulations for toll gantries, making it equally safe to use, easy to maintain, and can be dismantled and recycled after its minimum 20-year lifespan without any additional environmental impact.”

“For us, sustainable construction is not just an empty slogan; we aim to set new standards in this field,” state Hartwig Hufnagl and Herbert Kasser, board members of ASFINAG. “Innovation is the driving force behind us. We believe that wood, as a building material, can play a significant role in the highways of the future.”

The eco-friendly gantry is constructed using laminated and glued spruce wood at its core. Weather-resistant larch wood is used for the outer layer, which can be easily repaired in case of damage.

The eco-gantry is powered by solar panels. Additionally, a battery system has been installed to ensure 24×7 storage, ensuring availability in inclement weather and at night.
