Latest news from Hospital del Mar: Advances and innovative projects

The Hospital del Mar has released an impressive advancement in the field of oncology, by participating in the development of an innovative predictive tool to estimate the 90-day mortality of cancer patients admitted through the emergency department. This model, known as the PROMISE Score, has been developed in collaboration with the Vall d’Hebron Hospital and validated with patients from the Sant Pau Hospital and the Hospital del Mar itself.

The PROMISE Score is a web application that allows oncologists to quickly evaluate the prognosis of patients, differentiating those who may have a favorable outcome from those who may need more intensive interventions. The tool works based on five easily obtainable risk parameters at the time of patient admission. This ability to provide immediate information is crucial in improving the quality of care and avoiding unnecessary and painful procedures.

Specifically designed for metastatic cancer patients with severe symptoms such as acute pain, fever, or difficulty breathing, the PROMISE Score uses both clinical and laboratory data to calculate the risk of death in the next 90 days. This approach aims to provide valuable support to healthcare professionals in determining the best treatment strategies.

Dr. Sònia Servitja, a prominent medical oncologist, emphasized the importance of such a tool to adapt the intensity of treatments to the specific needs of each patient, using objective and constantly updated data. Through an analysis of a group of 1,009 patients, key variables in the prognosis have been identified, such as levels of the LDH enzyme, the quantity of neutrophils, and nutritional status.

This model not only represents a significant advancement in the care of oncology patients, but also opens the door to a more personalized treatment. The ability to better predict outcomes could not only increase survival rates but also contribute to a less invasive and more humane management of the disease.
