MEGA: A Less Invasive Solution for Obesity Management.

The Quirónsalud Vitoria Hospital has implemented new alternatives for the treatment of obesity, a condition that affects more than 25% of the adult population in Álava. In response to this public health challenge, the hospital’s obesity unit has adopted a comprehensive approach that combines advanced techniques with nutritional support, physical activity, and psychological counseling, all aimed at offering an effective and tailored treatment to the individual needs of the patients.

One of the most notable innovations is the MEGA technique, which represents an evolution of endoscopic gastroplasty. This minimally invasive procedure is performed through the mouth using an endoscope, thus eliminating the need for surgical incisions. The main goal of the technique is to internally suture the stomach to create a narrower cavity, allowing patients to feel full more quickly and, consequently, reduce their caloric intake.

Dr. Ramiro Carreño, a specialist in Digestive System at the hospital, argues that the MEGA technique generally involves only one night of hospital stay, making it a more comfortable option for those who wish to avoid the complications of major bariatric surgery. This alternative is especially recommended for patients who have not achieved sustainable results with dietary or pharmacological methods.

In recent years, the use of weight-loss drugs has gained prominence, but Dr. Carreño emphasizes that they should be considered as a supplement and not as a standalone solution. It is essential that these medications be administered under medical supervision and in conjunction with other techniques to improve results. In this way, the goal is to address obesity from a multifaceted and personalized approach.

Changes in dietary habits are also essential for the long-term success of treatment. Nutritionist Oihane Fuertes emphasizes the need to gradually modify habits and advises against quick diets, which can create a sense of deprivation. To maintain a balanced diet, Fuertes suggests weekly meal planning, dedicating a day to organize the menu and buy the necessary foods. This practice not only helps to avoid food waste but also promotes a varied and healthy diet throughout the week.

The multidisciplinary approach of the Quirónsalud Vitoria Hospital highlights the importance of comprehensive treatment in the fight against obesity, emphasizing that success is not only based on advanced techniques and pharmacological interventions but also on a firm commitment to lifestyle changes.
