Miguel Moragues, a renowned optometrist from La Rioja, has assumed the presidency of the Fundación Cione Ruta de la Luz since January of this year. With a distinguished career within the organization, Moragues has actively participated as a cooperant, board member, and volunteer in various charitable projects, including the successful “See to Grow” program.
Founded in 2000, the Fundación Cione has carried out intensive international cooperation work in the optical field, starting its activities in the 1990s with expeditions to Mauritania. During these missions, optometrists and ophthalmologists conducted thousands of visual examinations and distributed prescription glasses to those in need. Since then, the organization has grown, becoming a reference in visual health not only in Spain, but also in various regions of Africa and America.
In his new role, Moragues has emphasized the importance of the Foundation’s humanitarian work and its commitment to the most disadvantaged groups. The main goal of Ruta de la Luz is to improve the visual health of people at risk of social exclusion. The new president has stated that addressing these issues is essential, as visual health is a vital aspect for personal and professional development.
The Foundation not only provides assistance, but has also implemented projects aimed at promoting self-sufficiency in communities. A significant example is a project in Mozambique that has promoted local self-employment, allowing people to fend for themselves instead of receiving temporary solutions.
Since 2015, Ruta de la Luz has expanded its activities in Spain with the “See to Grow” program, designed to address local needs in visual health. Moragues has pointed out that often healthcare needs in his own country are overlooked and has reiterated the importance of not neglecting the nearby population.
Moragues takes over the leadership of the Foundation at a time when Ismael García Paya, who has been at the helm for nine years, has left it prepared to continue a successful legacy in international cooperation. García Paya has expressed his gratitude to all collaborators and entities that have supported the Foundation’s work, showing his confidence that Moragues will continue on this path.
The new president has urged society to learn more about and support the Foundation’s work, stating that “Ruta de la Luz is worth it.” With a renewed vision and a deep understanding of the organization, Miguel Moragues is ready to lead the Foundation towards new horizons in its commitment to visual health.
