In June 2025, Kapsch TrafficCom signed a contract for the renovation of the toll area in Zarautz Este, located in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country. This ambitious project, with a budget of €3.3 million, will be implemented over a period of 13 months and two weeks, aiming to enhance the toll payment experience for drivers using the AP-8 motorway. This communication artery connects the French border with major metropolitan areas such as Donostia and Bilbao, playing a crucial role in traffic flow in the region.
The new contract reflects Kapsch TrafficCom’s growth in the Iberian Peninsula, following the successful renovation of toll stations in Irun and Orio, completed in December 2024. These facilities have benefited from significant technological improvements that optimize traffic flow and diversify payment methods for residents and tourists.
Juan Zamakona, Vice President and General Manager of Kapsch TrafficCom for Iberia, expressed his satisfaction in continuing the collaboration in Gipuzkoa. “We are committed to modernizing toll infrastructure and our ability to provide effective solutions under complex conditions,” he stated.
The location of Zarautz Este is key, especially during vacation periods when traffic volume significantly increases. The success of this project will depend on effective coordination, as it will coincide with two other major infrastructure projects in the area.
The scope of the project includes 50% of the civil works, which will be carried out in collaboration with Construcciones Amenabar. Kapsch TrafficCom will be responsible for modernizing the infrastructure and improving operational efficiency, thus strengthening its position as a technological leader in the region. The company has renovated a total of six toll stations and 55 lanes on the AP-8 motorway. Headquartered in Vienna, Kapsch TrafficCom operates in over 50 countries and stands out as an international provider of transport solutions with a focus on sustainable mobility. During the fiscal year 2024/25, the company generated revenues of €530 million, supported by a team of more than 3,000 employees.
