Private transportation continues to be predominant in work commutes in Spain, according to a recent report from the Arval Mobility Observatory. Despite efforts to diversify mobility options and attract talent, the study reveals that 64% of Spanish workers chose private car in 2023 to get to their workplaces. Although this figure is slightly below the European average of 71%, it still reflects a clear preference for private transportation in the country.
The report, presented on October 2, also examines alternatives to private cars, highlighting that public transportation is the second most popular option, followed by walking or using two-wheeled transportation. According to Arval, part of the BNP Paribas Group and specialized in mobility and full-service vehicle leasing, although Spaniards have access to public transportation from their homes comparable to other Europeans, connections to workplaces are notably lower. In addition, an increase in travel times across Europe has been noted.
As for business travel, private or company cars remain the predominant option, chosen by 41% of employees in Spain, a figure that increases to 47% in the rest of Europe. Safety, speed, and cost reduction are the main priorities in this type of mobility.
The report highlights that Spanish companies still have room for improvement in implementing corporate mobility solutions. Only 46% of them offer services in this area, as opposed to 65% in the rest of Europe. Generally, the facilities provided include parking spaces, combustion vehicles, and contributions for public transportation expenses.
This context unfolds in a scenario where telecommuting is an option for 54% of Spanish workers, a percentage that remains below the European average of 60%. This discrepancy persists even though 62% of employees in Spain consider mobility offerings to be an important factor when considering a new job.
