The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the Royal Decree that updates the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC 2023-2030), at the proposal of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). This new document is the result of the significant progress made in implementing the Government’s Green Agenda in recent years and the increase in European ambition to materialize an ecological transition that promotes competitiveness, modernizes the productive sector, creates new industrial and service ecosystems with quality employment, while improving territorial cohesion, combating global warming, improving ecosystems and human health, and strengthening strategic autonomy.
Spain has stood out as the first major European country where renewable electricity generation has covered more than 50% of demand. The Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) is mobilizing around 70,000 million euros in public investment, of which 39.7% is allocated to ecological transition. The country ranks among the main global receivers of new plant projects, known as “greenfield”, and is at the forefront of the European Union in this area.
The update of the PNIEC 2023 provides society with a framework of certainty and anticipation regarding the energy transition. This framework is designed to maximize the positive effects and prevent, minimize and compensate for the impacts of the model change, through fair transition policies.
This advancement reinforces Spain’s commitment to sustainability and the fight against climate change, consolidating its position as a leader in the adoption of renewable energies and in the promotion of balanced socio-economic development respectful of the environment.
