In a significant advancement for users of the Windows Insider program, Microsoft has announced the release of version 27863 of Windows 11 in the Canary Channel. This update, although it does not currently include any SDK releases planned for the 27xxx series, introduces several important improvements and fixes for users participating in this program.
One of the standout features of this new version is the incorporation of post-quantum signature algorithms, specifically the ML-DSA, into the NCrypt and BCrypt cryptography APIs, as well as the Crypt32 certificate APIs. This advancement was revealed during the recent Build conference, where users were invited to experiment with and validate the ML-DSA certificates in versions 27858 and later.
The update also addresses several technical issues. For example, a bug that prevented Windows Sandbox from launching, which previously displayed the error code 0xc0370106, has been fixed. Additional improvements have been made to resolve crashes in loading essential Windows surfaces in safe mode and in applications like Sticky Notes, which encountered issues when the display language was Hebrew or Arabic.
However, some known issues still exist. Users of Copilot+ PCs switching to the Canary Channel from other channels may lose the PIN and biometric data required for sign-in, although the PIN can be easily reset. An inconvenience has also been identified where the taskbar does not display the acrylic material, along with issues with sound output from audio devices with a high sampling rate. The development team is investigating these matters.
It is important for Canary Channel users to note that versions in this channel are experimental and do not align with a specific Windows release. This means that features may vary, be removed, or replaced, with no guarantee they will make it to a final version.
Finally, users wishing to exit the Canary Channel will need to perform a clean installation of Windows 11. They are also warned that using preview versions may result in a watermark on the desktop.
