New Samsung Health Software Development Kit drives advancements in healthcare innovation.

Samsung Electronics has today unveiled a new Samsung Health Software Development Kit (SDK) Suite. Designed to provide better support to developers and researchers in creating innovative health solutions, this SDK Suite harnesses Samsung’s advanced sensor technology and comprehensive health platform. This complete package of sensor components, data, accessories, and research stack is now available to an expanded range of partners, developers, and researchers.

The Sensor SDK gives developers access to Samsung’s BioActive Sensor algorithm on the Galaxy Watch, allowing them to explore new sectors of health services and create advanced solutions. The BioActive Sensor measures a diverse range of health metrics, including heart rate, skin temperature, electrocardiogram (ECG), and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). A notable update introduces continuous access to Infrared (IR) Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor data and Red LED for the first time. This advancement will help enhance services related to blood oxygen level (SpO₂), improving sleep quality and beyond. The enhanced BIA now provides additional measurements —magnitude and grade— expanding the existing eight indicators, such as skeletal muscle mass and body fat mass, to provide a more accurate analysis of body composition and offer a deeper insight into overall physical health.

Starting in October, the new Data SDK will allow developers to use integrated health data collected from various devices such as the Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring, smartphones, and even third-party devices to create innovative digital health solutions. Data SDK provides access to health metrics in the Samsung Health app —including sleep, exercise, blood pressure, food intake, and blood glucose levels— analyzed by its advanced algorithm. These insights crafted by Samsung Health enable developers to enhance their productivity in developing healthcare services.

With Accessory SDK, developers can integrate compatible third-party health devices —such as blood pressure monitors, fitness devices like bike sensors, heart rate monitors, and even glucose monitors— through the Samsung Health app. This facilitates the viewing of health status information in one place without the need to activate third-party apps, promoting a seamless and simplified experience and expanding the ecosystem for comprehensive health management.

Research Stack is an open-source project aimed at expanding the digital health research ecosystem. Research Stack creates a flexible and versatile research environment, providing not only mobile and wearable app SDKs, but also a web portal and backend services to support all stages of the research process, from recruitment and surveys to progress tracking and outcome monitoring. The recently updated research stack features a comprehensive toolkit developed based on valuable feedback from research institutions and their experiences implementing complex and large-scale studies. Additionally, the upcoming version 2.0 will directly integrate the Sensor SDK and Data SDK from the Health SDK Suite. Research Stack has already been used by leading institutions as part of their research and discovery processes, highlighting Samsung’s active support for the health industry, providing researchers with more efficient studies and meaningful results.
