Overwhelming Success of the 1st Edition of the CodeOK Program: 5,000 Students and 280 Educational Institutions Involved

Here’s the translation into American English:

About 200 secondary education students gathered at Bizkaia Aretoa to participate in the final of the first hackathon in Euskadi, an event that concludes the CodeOK 2024-2025 initiative. This program, which has received support from the Basque Government’s Department of Education and the GAIA Cluster, aims to promote digital skills and computational thinking from an early age, fostering STEM vocations and increasing the representation of women in technology careers.

During the current school year, a total of 280 educational institutions have been involved in CodeOK, with 4,995 students aged 12 to 16 and 224 teachers actively participating. The program is based on a digital educational platform designed to introduce students to computational thinking and develop essential digital skills.

GAIA’s pedagogical approach combines elements of gamification, problem-solving challenges, and discovery-based learning, thus stimulating a strategic mindset when addressing problems. Throughout the year, students have completed more than 612,000 tasks, dedicating a total of 11,300 hours to the learning process. This dedication has allowed young people to acquire not only programming skills but also essential competencies such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Judit Iriondo, the project manager for CodeOK, emphasized the importance of computational thinking as a cross-cutting skill for future generations in the digital age. In the hackathon final, seven finalist classes faced challenges in two programming categories: Toy Script and Java Script.

Additionally, the conclusion of CodeOK hosted a public event titled “Developing Competencies in Education,” inaugurated by Aitor Uriondo, which brought together about 300 people. At this gathering, various digitalization initiatives in education were presented, and the importance of developing digital skills from an early age was discussed.

At the end of the event, the winners of the hackathon were awarded. In the Toy Script category, the first prize went to Eskolabarri Ikastetxea of Ermua, while Lizardi BHI from Zarautz and Bermeo BHI secured second and third place, respectively. In the Java Script category, the first award was given to the students of Egiluze Ikastetxea from Rentería, followed by Colegio Berakruz from Markina and Ikastola San Fidel from Gernika in second and third place, respectively.
