The Valencian Regional Government has taken a significant step in managing the waste generated by the floods on October 29th by awarding a contract valued at 178.95 million euros for the removal and processing of accumulated debris. This contract, deemed the largest in connection with the aftermath of the DANA weather event, aims to handle 750,000 tons of waste that currently overwhelm local Transfer and Collection Points.
Recent estimates show that nearly 800,000 tons of waste are piled up in these affected areas, out of more than 1.5 million tons the disaster has left in the region. This amount is comparable to the annual waste production of the entire Valencian Community. The contract has been divided into three lots of 59.6 million euros each, intended for the management of 250,000 tons of waste per lot.
Paprec, the company selected to manage the third lot, is now responsible for the waste at the Transfer Point in Picassent and the Local Collection Points of several municipalities including Alzira, Cullera, Sueca, and Tavernes de la Valldigna. As part of the plan initiated by the Valencian Regional Government, there will be a gradual removal of transfer points located in Quart de Poblet, Catarroja, and Picassent, where waste will be processed before being transported to a landfill.
The project will focus on non-hazardous waste, though actions will also be taken regarding hazardous waste found within the accumulations, which will be managed by specialized and authorized companies. This award strengthens Paprec’s presence in the Spanish market and particularly in the Valencian Community, highlighting its commitment and expertise in reducing the environmental and health impacts left by the floods in the region.
