On March 3, 2025, it was announced that the Spanish Association for the Study of Liver (AEEH) has granted a significant grant to Hospital del Mar to carry out an innovative project for screening hepatitis B and C. This initiative, which will be developed at the Peracamps Primary Care Emergency Center, represents a significant advance in the detection and treatment of these diseases in the primary care setting.
Dr. Montserrat García Retortillo, who leads the Digestive System Service at Hospital del Mar and is a researcher at its research institute, was the prominent figure at the grant award ceremony, which coincides with the celebration of the AEEH’s 50th anniversary. This recognition, known as the Gilead grant, emphasizes the relevance of the project, which aims to implement screening for viral hepatitis in patients attending emergency services, a pioneering approach in this context.
The ambitious project, called EMERGEN-C, aims to facilitate opportunistic screening for hepatitis B and C and establish pathways to ensure that diagnosed patients can access appropriate treatments. This strategy not only seeks to identify cases of hepatitis at early stages, but also to ensure proper follow-up and treatment, which could improve public health and reduce the burden that these conditions represent in the population.
Through this initiative, Hospital del Mar positions itself as a leader in the fight against viral hepatitis, promoting early detection and access to treatments that can make a considerable difference in the quality of life of those suffering from these conditions. It is expected that this project will lay the groundwork for future studies and developments in the field of hepatology and comprehensive patient care, reaffirming the center’s commitment to innovation in healthcare.
