The company Recycling of Electronic Components, RECILEC, SA, has obtained the prestigious European certification WEEELABEX CFA-Type1&2 for the treatment of temperature exchange appliances, such as refrigerators, at its facilities in Aznalcóllar, Seville. With this achievement, RECILEC joins a select European group of certified operators in the treatment of refrigerators, of which only two other plants in Spain are part. This certification is listed in the WEEELABEX TREATMENT OPERATOR certified operators list.
The certified treatment process has required an investment of over 4 million euros and employs the best available technologies, achieving high levels of waste recovery, environmental protection, safety, health, and efficiency. RECILEC’s refrigerator treatment line has the capacity to process up to two refrigerators or electric heaters per minute.
The WEEELABEX certifications, granted by the WEEELABEX Organization, are based on compliance with the European Standards of the EN50625 series, also known as CENELEC Standards. These European standards for the treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment were required by the European Union under DIRECTIVE 2012/19/EU of July 4, 2012.
The certification obtained by RECILEC is one of the most difficult to obtain within the WEEELABEX certifications, due to the strict requirements reviewed in the audit process. To obtain the certificate for a specific WEEELABEX flow, it is necessary to comply with the requirements of the general treatment standards (EN50625-1) and their technical specifications, which include decontamination requirements, quality of fractions obtained, daily monitoring, control of managers, applied technologies, safety, health, and document management.
Compliance with CENELEC standards ensures compliance with the specific treatment requirements of the Spanish WEEE regulations. RECILEC has been involved in the development of CENELEC Standards since 2012, with the company’s HSEQ systems manager, José Suárez, representing the Spanish national committee in the working groups of the technical committee TC111X of CENELEC.
In 2014, RECILEC obtained its first WEEELABEX certification under standard EN50574:2012 for its first refrigerator treatment line, which has been replaced by the current line certified under standards EN50625-1:2014; CLC/TS 50625-3-1:2015 and EN50625-2-3:2017; CLC/TS50625-3-4:2017.
