Report sheds light on the violation of the rights of people with MCS and EHS in Spain and demands urgent measures.

On February 13, 2024, the online presentation of the report titled “The figures of MCS and EHS from a human rights and disability perspective” was carried out by the National Coalition of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome / Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Electrosensitivity and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Entities (CONFESQ). This report highlights the critical situation faced by people affected by Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and Electrosensitivity (EHS) in Spain, highlighting the urgency of adopting structural measures to combat the social exclusion they suffer.

During the presentation, lawyers Paloma Torres López and Isabel Diez Velasco, from MEDUSA Human Rights, highlighted the experiences of rights violations and the lack of official recognition of organic disability. Among the most notable findings, it was emphasized that an alarming 72% of respondents feel excluded from society. This exclusion is largely attributed to the inadequate healthcare they receive, as 49% avoid going to hospitals due to a lack of specific protocols and 67% indicate that medical staff are not familiar with these conditions, resulting in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment.

The situation in the workplace is equally concerning, as only 27% of respondents are employed, while 73% are unemployed or incapacitated. Over 70% of requests for workplace adaptations have been denied, perpetuating stigma and barriers to accessing dignified employment. Regarding housing, 38% of respondents have had to move due to inadequate living conditions.

The report concludes with urgent demands directed at authorities to implement effective solutions. These include the creation of specific healthcare protocols, official recognition of organic disability, promotion of inclusive labor policies, and adaptation of public spaces and housing. The document emphasizes that “it is essential to adopt structural measures to eliminate these obstacles and ensure an accessible environment for all affected individuals.”

CONFESQ pledged to continue fighting for the rights of people with MCS and EHS, highlighting the need for collaboration between institutions to achieve significant and lasting change. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is characterized by adverse reactions to chemicals in the environment, while Electrosensitivity refers to adverse reactions to electromagnetic fields generated by electronic devices. This coalition represents over 11,000 patients and their families, who demand more dignified and fair treatment.
