Samsung Electronics and KT Corporation have been selected to implement a private 5G network in the innovative ‘Smart Naval Port’ project of the Republic of Korea Navy. This project marks a milestone as the first of its kind in a Korean naval base, aimed at enhancing the operational and defensive capabilities of warships and their bases. The deployment of the infrastructure is expected to be completed by December 2025, after the collaboration between both companies began in the summer of 2024.
Private 5G solutions are essential in the national defense sector due to their ultra-fast speeds and highly connected communications, allowing for efficient and uninterrupted management. With this infrastructure, the aim is to create an environment that increases the security and reduces vulnerabilities of the Korean naval fleet.
Samsung and KT are developing an intelligent and independent network, ensuring optimized coverage and connectivity for the Republic of Korea Navy Fleet 2. In addition, the use of artificial intelligence will integrate advanced technological solutions, increasing military efficiency and security. The project includes the creation of a complete Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, covering operations from drones to arsenal management.
Among the specific innovations to be introduced, the use of a digital twin for naval base management stands out. This high-definition digital replica will offer an integrated management system that will enhance strategic decision-making, increasing the resilience and adaptability of the base. Additionally, intelligent security monitoring will allow real-time control through surveillance cameras and drones, optimizing emergency response. Furthermore, there will be a comprehensive management system for warship operations, centralizing critical functions such as logistics and security.
Jun-Ho Kim, Senior Vice President of KT Enterprise, highlighted that the goal is to establish a standardized system that reinforces the operational capabilities of naval bases and warships. Samsung will contribute its private 5G network solution, including a compact 5G SA core and radio solutions tailored to the military environment.
This project is another example of Samsung and KT’s commitment to exploring and maximizing the potential of 5G, once again demonstrating their capacity and reliability in both private and public sectors globally.
