OpenAI and multiple divisions of the Samsung conglomerate have formalized a letter of intent that marks the beginning of a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating the development of global artificial intelligence infrastructure. With this alliance, both entities seek to combine Samsung’s strengths in areas such as semiconductors, shipbuilding, and cloud services to create innovative solutions.
The signing of the agreement took place at Samsung’s headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, where high-ranking executives from various branches of the company were present. Notable attendees included Young Hyun Jun, CEO of Samsung Electronics; Sung-an Choi, CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries; Sechul Oh, CEO of Samsung C&T; and Junehee Lee, CEO of Samsung SDS. The presence of these figures reflects the importance both companies place on this project.
Samsung Electronics will act as OpenAI’s strategic memory partner, committed to providing advanced semiconductor solutions for the initiative known as Stargate. It is estimated that OpenAI will require up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, and Samsung aims to meet this demand using its diverse range of high-performance and energy-efficient memory solutions. The company is also renowned for its advanced chip packaging, giving it a competitive edge.
In parallel, Samsung SDS will collaborate with OpenAI on the joint development of data centers specialized in artificial intelligence. This unit of Samsung will be responsible for the design and operation of the AI Stargate centers, as well as providing consulting services for companies wishing to integrate OpenAI’s AI solutions into their operations. A partnership has also been established for the resale of OpenAI services in Korea, expanding the scope of the collaboration.
Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will also play a key role in the evolution of data centers on a global scale, focusing on the development of floating data centers. These centers offer advantages, including reduced costs and carbon emissions, despite the technical complexities associated with their implementation. The cooperation will also extend to exploring projects related to floating power plants and control centers.
With this partnership, Samsung will align with the goals of the South Korean government, which seeks to position the country among the top three nations in artificial intelligence. Additionally, the company is evaluating the integration of ChatGPT into its own operations, aiming to facilitate a digital transformation in its work environment.
