Samsung Electronics has announced the inclusion of five new young leaders in its Generation17 initiative, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This program supports young people committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a task that is becoming increasingly urgent given the need for innovative solutions in key areas such as marine conservation, environmental sustainability, gender equality, and quality education.
Generation17, launched in 2020, has provided support to young leaders from various regions of the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. This initiative addresses pressing issues related to the 17 SDGs, offering participants access to Samsung’s advanced technology, as well as mentoring opportunities and networking connections, with the aim of amplifying their stories and promoting their work in their communities.
Stephanie Choi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Electronics, expressed her enthusiasm for the new cohort of leaders, highlighting that their passion and creativity are crucial for addressing current global challenges. Among the new members are Brigitta Gunawan from Indonesia, an advocate for oceanic climate; José Francisco Ochoa from Ecuador, co-founder of an educational technology platform focused on marine conservation; Renata Koch Alvarenga from Brazil, founder of an organization dedicated to climate justice with a focus on gender equality; Rahaf Abu Mayyaleh from Jordan, an activist developing sustainable educational kits; and Soumya Dabriwal from India, co-founder of a social enterprise addressing menstrual hygiene and reproductive health.
These young leaders will play an active role in driving global efforts to achieve the SDGs and will participate in upcoming international events, where they can interact with policymakers and other innovators, contributing to the conversation on sustainable development and calling for action towards a more equitable future.
The relevance of Generation17 continues to grow, reflecting the need to give voice to young people on the global agenda. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the UNDP, emphasized the importance of the active role young people will play in the future of global development and the urgency of acting to fulfill the SDGs in the remaining time.
The partnership between Samsung and the UNDP highlights their commitment to using technology to make a positive impact and the importance of youth innovation in building a more sustainable and just world.
