Samsung unveiled Onyx at CinemaCon 2025: New Standards in LED Cinematic Innovation.

Samsung Electronics has taken a significant step in the film industry by introducing its latest innovation, the Onyx screen (model ICD), during CinemaCon 2025. This launch marks a milestone in movie projection, solidifying Samsung’s position as a leader in LED screen technology since 2017. The new Onyx has been designed to meet the growing demands of cinemas around the world, offering unparalleled image quality, superior reliability, and scalability options that promise to redefine the viewer’s experience.

Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display division, emphasized the industry shift towards more immersive and visually stunning cinematic experiences. “With Onyx, we not only provide the best visual quality, but also the versatility that cinemas need to meet changing audience expectations,” he stated.

One of the key innovations of the Onyx screen is its DCI certification as the first LED screen for cinemas, capable of achieving pure black levels and an infinite contrast ratio. This results in exceptional color accuracy and refresh rates of up to 4K at 120Hz, allowing for extremely smooth motion playback and vivid detail.

Versatility in size is another highlight of Onyx. The screen is available in four standard sizes with flexible scaling options, allowing cinemas to maximize their space and offer large-format projections without compromising image quality. The dimensions are ideal for various types of cinemas, from boutiques to premium auditoriums, and support both cinema scope aspect ratios and flat format, ensuring the integrity of the projections.

Onyx’s brightness is another standout feature, reaching levels of up to 300 nits, making it six times brighter than conventional standards. This feature allows not only for movie projection, but also for viewing alternative content, such as live sports events and concerts, expanding the possibilities of cinema room usage.

With a focus on durability, Onyx comes with the industry’s longest warranty: 10 years for LED screens in cinemas. This warranty represents a reliable long-term investment for cinema owners. Additionally, the screen includes an automatic calibration solution that ensures optimal image quality over time.

Onyx’s compatibility with media servers, such as Dolby and GDC, and recognized audio systems like Dolby Atmos and Meyer Sound, allows cinemas to customize the audio experience, better adapting to their audience’s needs.

Onyx technology has already found its place in cinemas around the world, setting new standards in the field of cinema screens. A recent example of its implementation can be seen at the Pathé Palace in Paris, where it has been chosen to enhance the visual experience. During CinemaCon, Samsung has invited attendees to experience Onyx technology at their booth at Caesars Palace, showcasing the latest advances in movie technology.
