An Abulense company has recently been recognized as an INNOVATIVE SME by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. This prestigious designation, obtained by only two out of every thousand small and medium-sized companies in Spain, highlights the more than 160-year trajectory of this brand, known especially for its production of authentic Yemas de Santa Teresa. This recognition not only emphasizes their commitment to innovation, but also the fundamental value of the people who make up their team.
The history of Santa Teresa dates back almost 170 years, starting in a small pastry shop in Ávila. Despite the difficulties the company has faced in the last two decades, it has managed to find its way in a highly competitive market, focusing its value proposition on innovation while keeping its traditional roots in mind. The recent certification as an INNOVATIVE SME is a reflection of this innovative culture, as well as their commitment to the economic development of the province of Ávila, which has been one of the regions most affected by depopulation in Spain.
Santa Teresa not only focuses on creating high-quality natural products, but has also adopted new processes and advanced technologies. In the past year, the company has invested more than 1% of its turnover in research and development, resulting in the launch of over ten new products that represent almost 5% of its total revenue. This dedication to innovation is accompanied by a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
In addition to developing new products, the company has explored new market niches and consumption moments, which has allowed them to receive support from the Castilla y León Regional Government through an Innovative Plan for SMEs. The previous project resulted in the creation of Caprichos de Membrillo, which enhanced the image of the company and expanded its potential audience.
An outstanding aspect of their approach is the minimization of waste and the improvement of their production processes. A notable achievement in this regard is the collaboration with the Catholic University of Ávila and Raíz Cuadrada Beers to develop a local beer that uses the quince heart as a substitute for hops, thus revaluing a byproduct that was previously discarded.
Isabel López Resina, CEO of Santa Teresa, sums up the company’s philosophy by saying: “The equation tradition plus innovation equals excellence in products and services has always been in Santa Teresa’s DNA.” This vision has become more systematic and market-oriented in recent years, becoming a true purpose that guides their value proposition.
