Schaeffler Introduces Innovations in Bearings for Demanding Environments

The German company Schaeffler has taken a significant step in the field of rail transport by introducing a series of technological innovations designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of rail vehicles. These solutions, recently highlighted at the InnoTrans fair, focus on advanced bearing technology for traction motors, crucial for preventing damage and reducing the number of unexpected and costly repairs.

The focus of these innovations is on electrically insulated bearings, which incorporate the Insutect A ceramic coating, an original creation of Schaeffler. This coating is responsible for neutralizing unwanted electrical currents that arise during the operation of electric motors in rail vehicles. If not controlled, such currents can cause severe damage to critical components such as grease and gearbox housings, as well as traction motors. The consequences include premature wear of running tracks and rolling elements, along with lubricant degradation, leading to unexpected failures and costly repairs.

In addition to the reliability improvement, these new bearings represent a cost-effective solution by significantly lowering maintenance costs and increasing operational availability. During their presentation at InnoTrans, Schaeffler also highlighted the introduction of high-capacity cylindrical roller bearings. These feature a new solid brass “MP” cage, which enhances resistance to vibrations and shocks, even at high speeds. This feature allows for reconditioning without structural damage, extending the components’ lifespan.

These innovations not only promote operational optimization but also greater economic and environmental sustainability, reducing lifecycle costs and total ownership costs. Additionally, the increased durability of the parts translates these advancements into ecological benefits, improving the environmental balance for rail operators.

These solutions reflect Schaeffler’s commitment to technological innovation in the rail transport sector, responding to the growing demands for components that can withstand increasingly demanding operating conditions and extreme loads. The company continues to reaffirm its position as a leader in the development of advanced technology for more efficient and reliable transportation.
