Scholarships and Awards from the Spanish Association of Surgeons for the Promotion of Training and Research in Surgery.

The Spanish Association of Surgeons (AEC) has launched a new call for grants for its members, aiming to promote professional development in the surgical field. This program is designed for surgeons who wish to strengthen their training and develop research projects, offering various financing options focused on General Surgery and Digestive System. Those interested in participating can submit their applications until May 8, 2025.

Among the available grants, the AEC will award five research grants reaching up to 10,000 euros each, aimed at multicenter studies, along with two grants for single-center projects with funding of up to 5,000 euros. Additionally, two grants will be offered for Multicenter Registry type research and a specific grant for multicenter projects in collaboration with hospitals in Latin America, with similar funding.

It is important to note that these grants are exclusively reserved for specialist members of the AEC. The evaluation of projects will be based on criteria such as originality, clinical and methodological relevance, as well as consistency in the development of the project presented.

In addition to research grants, the AEC has announced grants for training stays, aimed at specialists and fourth and fifth-year residents. There is also a specific grant for stays in Latin America, which aims to promote international collaboration in the field of surgery. According to Dr. José Francisco Noguera, President of the Scientific Committee of the AEC, these initiatives aim to enhance research and training, considered fundamental pillars of the association, with the goal of improving patient care.

At the same time, the AEC has inaugurated the National Surgery Awards “José Luis Balibrea”, which will reward the two best surgery papers published in 2024. The first prize will receive a grant of 3,000 euros, while a runner-up will receive 1,500 euros, in addition to a special prize for residents valued at 1,500 euros.

Since its foundation in 1935, the AEC has been committed to progress in the field of surgery, improving the quality of patient care and promoting teaching and research. Today, the association has more than 5,000 members and maintains active collaboration with other scientific organizations.
