Secure Password Implementation in Microsoft Edge for Business Entities

In a context where cybersecurity has become a priority for organizations, Microsoft has launched the secure password deployment option in its Edge browser, specifically aimed at businesses. This feature allows administrators to implement shared and encrypted passwords, addressing the common issue of insecure password sharing often communicated through sticky notes or emails.

The main goal of this solution is to enhance security by enabling employees to access critical systems without resorting to insecure methods for sharing credentials. Users will receive passwords on their devices, allowing them to authenticate on various sites more easily and securely. The new functionality not only prevents unauthorized password forwarding but also strengthens the organization’s overall security.

Integrated into the Microsoft Edge management service, this feature is managed from the Microsoft 365 admin center. Administrators can set policies for the browser that facilitate the deployment of encrypted passwords to specific groups, streamlining administration and ensuring that credentials are up-to-date and under control.

Once a user receives a shared password, it is automatically added to Edge’s password manager, ready to be used on the corresponding site. However, it is important to note that these passwords are designed to be accessible but not editable or exportable, unless the site settings allow it. This ensures that only the necessary passwords are available and reduces the risk of misuse.

To further strengthen credential protection, Microsoft’s Protection SDK is utilized, implementing identity-linked encryption. This allows only authenticated users within the organization to access the encrypted credentials, using standardized security algorithms. This way, the risk of credentials being compromised is minimized, even if they are moved or copied outside the browser.

Those interested in implementing this feature must access the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center. The feature is available for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, E3, and E5 subscriptions and requires users to have the appropriate admin roles. With this launch, Microsoft Edge for Business reinforces its commitment to providing security solutions that meet the current needs of organizations.
