Significant Recovery in Key Labor Market Sectors During the Second Quarter of 2024

Between the first and second quarter of 2024, 3.2 million unemployed people aged 15 to 74 in the European Union, representing 24.0% of all unemployed in the first quarter of 2024, found employment. During this period, 6.8 million (51.2%) remained unemployed and 3.3 million unemployed (24.8%) left the labor force.

The information comes from recently published data on labor market flows in the second quarter of 2024. This article presents some findings from the more detailed “Statistics Explained” article.

The visualization and table provide an overview of all possible transitions and show changes in the state of the labor market. In the visualization, the figures for employment, unemployment, and labor force exit refer to the number of people remaining in each situation between the two quarters, while the arrows indicate the number of people moving from one state to another.

Of all those employed in the first quarter of 2024, 2.6 million (1.2%) became unemployed in the second quarter of 2024, and 4.8 million (2.3%) exited the labor force.

Of those who were out of the labor force in the first quarter of 2024, 4.5 million (3.9%) entered employment in the second quarter of 2024, and 3.7 million (3.2%) moved into unemployment.
