The renowned Belgian designer Charles Kaisin has launched an innovative project that connects the cities of Brussels and Kiev through art, with a focus on peace and solidarity. This ambitious initiative materializes in a monumental installation composed of over 5,000 origamis, aimed at raising funds for the Kiev Medical Rehabilitation Center, providing access to medical supplies and care for patients suffering from the aftermath of the conflict in Ukraine.
Since its inception in May 2022, the project has been instrumental in strengthening the bonds between Brussels and Kiev. Under the auspices of the CHU Saint-Pierre Foundation, medical supplies have been successfully sent to key hospitals in the Ukrainian capital, such as Hospital N6 and Hospital 18, benefiting hundreds of patients in a critical stage of the humanitarian crisis.
The Medical Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Center, which will receive significant support from this initiative, specializes in rehabilitative medicine and has been revamped to meet the needs of patients with complex wounds. Since the start of this effort, they have treated over 1,300 patients, thanks to a multidisciplinary team that tailors their intervention to each case and conducts regular visits to assess the situation on the ground.
Kaisin became involved in this cause after his visit to Kiev in September 2024. In an act of community engagement, children from the Palace of Youth in Kiev participated in creating the origamis, highlighting the importance of intergenerational solidarity. The installation will be displayed on the facade of the Museum of History in Kiev from April 6 to July 6, 2025, and will subsequently be moved to the Palace of Youth, expanding its reach and significance.
This project is presented not only as a work of art, but as a powerful visual testament to Brussels’ ongoing support for Kiev in times of adversity. With each origami, a story of life and hope is narrated, and the collaboration between the cities and the Saint-Pierre Foundation enhances the relevance of this fundraising initiative. As the relationship between Brussels and Kiev grows stronger, Kaisin’s work transforms into a vibrant symbol of resilience and hope amidst the crisis.
